Imperial vs Metric System

It’s true that the Imperial System still prevails in the United States, with measurements typically done in feet, inches, and pounds. However, most countries around the world use the Metric System of measurements, which includes measures like meters, grams, and liters.

Thankfully for me (and my fellow foodie friends), both systems recognize teaspoons, tablespoons, and cups as measurements of volume that are specific to cooking.

These days I am converting all sorts of measurements. Knowing how many teaspoons are in a tablespoon is a super handy piece of info. And so is how many tablespoons are in a cup.

I find that when baking, it is important that your measurements be quite precise. So follow the tips below to ensure you get an accurate measurement.

When cooking other types of dishes, your measurements can be a little more flexible. If you are unsure, it’s always best to start with less as you can always add more.

How To Measure Ingredients Properly

  1. Make sure to use the appropriate size of measuring cup or spoon for the job.
  2. Don’t use your dry ingredient cups to measure liquids! Use cups or jugs that are meant for liquids. Place them on a flat, even surface and position yourself so the measurement mark is at eye level.
  3. When measuring dry ingredients (flour, sugar, spices), your vessel should be filled to the top. Use the back of a kitchen knife to scrape across the top to level it off.
