Is it an Emergency?

Common warning signs and symptoms of a medical emergency:

• Difficulty breathing, shortness of breath
• Chest or upper abdominal pain, or pressure lasting two minutes or more
• Fainting, sudden dizziness, weakness
• Change in vision
• Difficulty speaking
• Confusion in mental status, unusual behavior, difficulty walking
• Any sudden or severe pain
• Uncontrolled bleeding
• Severe or persistent vomiting or diarrhea
• Coughing or vomiting blood
• Suicidal or homicidal feelings
• Unusual abdominal pain

Children may display different symptoms than adults. Always get immediate medical attention if you think your child is having a medical emergency.

For Non-Life-Threatening Emergencies

Triage

How quickly you are seen by a physician depends on the triage process. When arriving at the Emergency Department, a triage nurse will perform a basic assessment of symptoms and determine the severity of illness. A patient’s order of treatment in the Emergency Department is based on the severity of the illness, not on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Level II Trauma Center

Washington Regional Emergency Department is the only Level II Trauma Center in Northwest Arkansas. Level II Trauma Centers can provide care for critically ill or injured patients with 24-hour immediate coverage by general surgery, orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, anesthesiology, emergency medicine, radiology and critical care.

Comprehensive Stroke Center

Washington Regional Medical Center is certified as a Comprehensive Stroke Center by the Joint Commission. As a comprehensive stroke center, Washington Regional provides the highest level of stroke care in Northwest Arkansas. Stroke patients have access to advanced treatments without having to be transferred to another facility, and is the only hospital in the area where patients can receive 24/7 in-person care from stroke experts. Washington Regional is also the only hospital in the region to offer advanced 24/7 neurosurgical care, advanced imaging and minimally invasive stroke treatment options, such as thrombectomy.

Lantern Award

Washington Regional’s emergency department is the first in Arkansas to earn the Emergency Nurses Association Lantern Award® and one of only 53 in the world in 2023 to receive the prestigious distinction, which recognizes emergency departments that exemplify exceptional and innovative leadership, practice, education, advocacy and research.

Emergency Medicine Providers

Emergency Medicine Providers specialize in treating patients with acute illnesses or injuries. Their primary role is to evaluate the severity of symptoms, resuscitate if necessary, stabilize and begin intervention for diagnosis or treatment of patients. The providers will determine whether the patient requires admission to the hospital or can be discharged with recommendations for follow up care if applicable.
